GS 1968 ARTICLE 57

Regarding Translation Heidelberg Catechism, Committee II presents:

Materials:

  • a. Report,I,9, of Deputies;
  • b. Overture,lll,31, of the Church at Orangeville, Ont., proposing that Synod adopt the recommendations mentioned in the report of Deputies.

Observations:

  • 1. Deputies have adduced proofs that neither of the translations mentioned is such an improvement over the text presently in use as to warrant adoption.
  • 2. Deputies have given a description of the qualifications required for the examination of various translations as set out in the mandate given by Synod Edmonton 1965.

Considerations:

  • 1. It will be very difficult to find within the churches persons with these required qualifications.
  • 2. Adoption of another translation at this time might be premature in view of work being done by others.

Recommendation:

  • Synod appoint Deputies with the mandate to be diligent with respect to all aspects of a new translation and publication of the Heidelberg Catechism and to report to the churches in due time.
